This Week’s Weather in Apalachicola
This looks like a wetter week. Highs stay in the upper 70s to low 80s, with overnight lows in the low-to-mid 70s. Monday and Tuesday carry the highest storm chance. Wednesday and Thursday ease off a bit, then Friday through Sunday pick the storms back up. Mornings are still the better window, but keep an eye on the afternoon.

Halloween Spooky Spider Deviled Eggs Grits and Pinecones turns hard-boiled eggs into a Halloween plate with olive spiders and candy eyes. About 20 minutes, and it can be filled ahead. Add the eyes just before serving so they don’t melt.

A few local notes worth sharing this week:
🧪 Jean Roberts retires after 47 years at Weems
Jean Roberts, a clinical laboratory technologist at Weems Memorial Hospital, has retired after more than 47 years, the Apalachicola Times reported. Born and raised in Apalachicola, she graduated from Chapman High School in 1965, trained in Indianapolis, and joined Weems in October 1978. Weems CEO David Walker honored her at a retirement gathering. 👉 https://franklincounty.news/2026/09/29/roberts-retires-after-47-years-at-weems/

🦪 Apalachicola Bay oyster season is open, with tight limits
The wild oyster season opened Oct. 1 for endorsed commercial harvesters and permitted recreational harvesters, and runs through Feb. 28, 2027. Harvest is limited to three reefs — NWFW Cat Point, Cat Point Spur, and Peanut Ridge — with a seasonal cap of 2,560 bags. Recreational harvest needs a 2026/27 Apalachicola Bay Recreational Opportunity Permit and is one bag tag for the reef named on that tag. Minimum size is 3 inches. Hand or tongs only. 👉https://www.theoutdoorwire.com/releases/2026/10/apalachicola-bay-oyster-season-begins-oct-1
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 🎶 Porch Fest Apalach is Saturday
Porch Fest is Saturday, Oct. 10, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in downtown Apalachicola. It is free, volunteer-run, and begins and ends at Battery Park. This year’s designated charity is Apalachicola Riverkeeper. 👉 https://porchfestapalach.com/ 👉 https://www.floridasforgottencoast.com/event/porch-fest-apalach-2/
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Seahawks are 7–1 after a 51–6 win at Graceville on Sept. 25 and a 48–30 home loss to Cottondale on Oct. 2. Next game is Friday at Wewahitchka if you want a sports line instead of Porch Fest. Read More... |

The Two-Waterfront Trick |
The Two-Waterfront Trick Most visitors stop at the working docks downtown and assume they’ve seen Apalachicola’s waterfront. For a quieter second act, head to Lafayette Park and walk out on its pier. You’ll get an open view across Apalachicola Bay—a surprisingly different scene just minutes from the riverfront. |

This Week Along the Forgotten Coast
October is here, and the coast has not made a speech about it. The days are still warm. The evenings just arrive a little sooner, and the marsh looks a shade more gold than it did in September.
Downtown keeps its usual pace. A door is open. Someone is on a porch. The water is the same water. What changes is small: a sweater in the car, a light on earlier, a week that feels less like summer leftover and more like its own month.
This is a good stretch to be on the coast without a reason. An errand, a walk, a table outside while the light is still good.
Enjoy the beauty around us and have a blessed week...

Franklin County Humane Society Needs Volunteers
The Franklin County Humane Society is looking for people who can help the forgotten pets of the Forgotten Coast. On their volunteer page they list several ways to pitch in: walk and socialize dogs and cats, foster (including puppies, nursing mothers, or animals recovering from surgery), drive transports to a midpoint in Chiefland (van and gas provided), take a “Dog for a Day,” help at events, or drop off supplies.
If any of that fits, call (850) 670-8414 or start here:

Thank you for reading this week’s Apalach Current — it really means a lot to have you here with me, noticing the small things that make this coast feel like home.
We'll be back next Monday with whatever the tide brings in. Until then, take care.
|
I write Apalach Current because I love this coast. This next part is just me. There have been seasons in my own life when everything felt like too much — work, family, the pace of it all. During the hardest parts of burnout, when I felt lost, uncertain, and ready to give up, I rediscovered something I’d been missing: my faith. What started as a search for a little more freedom turned into something deeper — a return to God, and a stronger relationship with Him. If you’re walking through a hard season and something feels missing, I want you to know it is possible to find God in the middle of that and come out the other side. I did. I’d like to share a link to a church that helped me when I was out of sorts. If you need someone to talk to or would like more info: Whether you click or not, just know this: You’re not alone.
