There are weeks when the coast feels like it’s holding its breath.
And then there are weeks like this one — when the air feels softer, the light lingers a little longer, and you realize the Forgotten Coast isn’t rushing toward summer… it’s simply settling into the best part of spring.
You can feel it in the small things: the way the marsh grass is turning that deep, vibrant green, the extra half-hour of daylight that lets you linger on the dock after dinner, and the quiet hum of boats heading out a little earlier each morning. After a few busy weekends, life eases back into a slower rhythm — not quiet exactly, but peaceful in a way that is comforting.
It’s the kind of week that reminds me why I love this time of year. You don’t have to chase anything.
You just have to show up… |

Support the Franklin County Humane Society 🐶 Adoptions 📅 Sundays ⏰ 2 pm to 3 pm 📍 Franklin County Humane Society
The Franklin County Humane Society has started hosting “Sunday Funday” adoption events where families can come meet the dogs and cats looking for homes in a relaxed, low-pressure setting. They are looking for volunteers. It will hopefully become a part of our Sunday routines — a chance for the community to connect with the animals and the dedicated team that cares for them week after week.
In a place that already moves at its own gentle pace, these small acts of kindness add up. Every adoption, every volunteer hour, and every visitor who stops by helps give these animals a second chance right here on the Forgotten Coast.
If you’ve been thinking about adding a four-legged friend to your life, or just want to support the shelter, the Franklin County Humane Society is always worth a visit.

Interesting Facts |
1. Apalachicola
Apalachicola is home to the man who invented mechanical refrigeration. In 1851, local physician Dr. John Gorrie patented the world’s first ice-making machine (U.S. Patent #8080) right here in Apalachicola. He created it to cool the rooms of yellow fever patients — the same invention that eventually led to modern air conditioning and refrigeration.

In 1838–1839, 56 delegates gathered here to draft Florida’s first state constitution. The town was once a booming cotton port, but a devastating hurricane and yellow fever epidemic later wiped much of it out — making the museum today a fascinating reminder of that early history. 👉 Citation / more info: Constitution Convention Museum State Park – Official Site 3. Apalachicola Bay / Eastpoint areaThe Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve is the second-largest estuarine research reserve in the United States. Spanning more than 246,000 acres, this protected area (headquartered in Eastpoint) preserves one of the most productive estuaries on the planet and plays a critical role in the health of the entire Forgotten Coast ecosystem. 👉 Citation / more info: Florida’s Forgotten Coast Official Site – History & Reserve |
