Even though I wasn’t able to make it to the Historic Apalachicola Home & Garden Tour, the reports coming out of the event made me smile.
Last Saturday, May 2, more than 800 people turned out despite concerns about the weather and a solid 2.5 inches of much-needed rain. The organizers called it a “resounding success,” and from everything I’ve heard, that description feels exactly right.
It’s always special to watch towns come together like this. Neighbors opened their homes and gardens to visitors, volunteers worked behind the scenes, local artists and merchants donated to the silent auction, and Trinity Episcopal Church hosted its largest annual fundraiser. For a few hours, the focus was on historic preservation, community spirit, and the simple joy of walking through beautiful old houses on the Forgotten Coast.
I’m especially sorry I missed it this time - it’s one of those events that always reminds me why I love this area. The warmth, the hospitality, and the pride in our town’s history are palpable, even from a distance. I’ve already made a note on next year’s calendar: May 1, 2027. I don’t plan to miss it again.
If you were one of the 800+ who attended, thank you for showing up and supporting this wonderful tradition. If you missed it this year too, maybe we’ll run into each other on the tour next spring.
