🐢 St. George Island Sea Turtle Patrol Finds 10 New Nests After Tropical Storm Bertha washed away or damaged a large number of nests, the St. George Island Sea Turtle Patrol focused on the positive and reported 10 new nests found over the weekend. This Week Along the Forgotten Coast
August settles onto the Forgotten Coast with a steady, familiar heat.
The calendar has turned, but the days keep the same deep-summer feel — long, humid, and paced by the light more than the clock. Mornings still offer the clearest stretch of cool air if you catch them early. By afternoon the sky often builds those soft clouds that may or may not deliver rain, and the towns ease into their mid-season rhythm without much fuss.
This is the stretch when the coast feels most settled in its own skin. The water holds its color, the marshes stay thick and green, and the ordinary sounds of summer — boats, distant voices, the quiet shift of wind — become the background instead of the exception.
It’s a good week to move with the season instead of against it. No need to fill every hour. The Forgotten Coast is already doing the important work of simply being here, steady and unhurried, just as it always has.

This no-kill shelter relies on community members to transport pets to vet appointments and foster homes, helping save countless local animals.
Volunteering is flexible, with no ongoing weekly commitment required, making it easy to get involved even with a busy schedule.

Breeze, a one-year-old Lab and Shepherd mix, is ready for adoption at the Franklin County Humane Society.
This gentle pup is known for his friendly nature and gets along well with other dogs and children.
During a visit with the office cat, Breeze showed calm behavior and curiosity.
Breeze is still learning leash manners and basic commands, but he’s very smart and responds quickly to training from the shelter’s dedicated volunteers.
