We stayed at the Majestic Jewel Inn with our gracious hosts, June and Greg this weekend. It was a wonderful stay — the kind of house you want to linger in, with a perfect walk-to-everything location downtown. If you’re looking for old Apalachicola instead of a generic hotel, this is it. More photos to come on Facebook.

We also toured Weems Memorial Hospital.  A short teaser from that visit is on the Apalach Current Facebook page, and we’ll be adding more from the tour soon.

Thank you for reading!

That's a pretty respectable Forgotten Coast Saturday. 🌊🧤🏛️🎶

Dates and times may change — verify before heading out.

Happy exploring!

This Week’s Weather in Apalachicola

Mid-September still feels like late summer — highs from the mid-80s to around 90, with overnight lows in the mid-to-upper 70s. Monday and Tuesday look like the warmest stretch, with a typical afternoon-storm chance. Wednesday and Thursday are the driest days on the map. Rain chances climb again Friday through Sunday, so mornings remain the most comfortable time to get outside.

Boneless Country-Style Ribs in the Oven

Grits and Pinecones cooks these low and slow at 300°F until the pork is tender, then finishes them with barbecue sauce for a sticky glaze. No grill or smoker — just a rub, foil, and the oven. Easy enough for a weeknight, good enough for a full table.

The Forgotten Coast is full of good news this week, with three community highlights worth celebrating.

Small Wins and Good Things

Week of September 14–20, 2026

Here are a few bright spots making us smile this week on the Forgotten Coast:

🏈 Franklin County football is 5–0
The Seahawks stayed unbeaten Friday night, beating previously undefeated Liberty County 20–9 in Bristol. WCTV reports a late pick-six helped close it out. Next up is Friday at Rocky Bayou.

🚧 Highway 98 in Eastpoint is moving again
After a collapse in the construction zone closed part of U.S. 98, the road reopened to one lane Thursday evening, according to WJHG. The sheriff’s office had asked the state to speed repairs so traffic would not stay on the C.C. Land Road detour.

🎣 FWC is inviting freshwater anglers to log a Big Catch
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Big Catch program recognizes anglers who land a qualifying freshwater fish by length or weight. More than 30 species are eligible; youth have easier size minimums. Submit a photo at BigCatchFlorida.com.

Secret Little Hack

Early-Bird Shelling: Low-Tide Bonanza

Want to discover Apalachicola’s most incredible seashells without the crowds? Check the local tide chart for the lowest morning tide and be on the forgotten beaches—like St. George Island State Park or deserted stretches of Indian Pass—just as the tide starts rising. Retro currents uncover hidden troves of ancient, unbroken shells beneath the sand overnight, and you’ll have prime pickings before the day-trippers arrive. Bring a mesh bag and a bit of patience—you might even unearth rare olive shells or intricate augers that never make it to the busy shorelines!

_______________________________________________________

This Week Along the Forgotten Coast

By mid-September the holiday noise has left the coast. What remains is the ordinary week: warm afternoons, shorter evenings, and towns that sound like themselves again.

The heat is still here, but it does not run the whole day. Mornings feel usable. The marsh holds a little more gold. People linger at the library, the dock, or a table outside without needing a reason.

This is the stretch when the Forgotten Coast stops performing summer and simply keeps going. No announcement required — just another week of familiar light and familiar streets.

Enjoy the beauty around us and have a blessed week...

Franklin County Humane Society Needs Volunteers

The Franklin County Humane Society is looking for people who can help the forgotten pets of the Forgotten Coast. On their volunteer page they list several ways to pitch in: walk and socialize dogs and cats, foster (including puppies, nursing mothers, or animals recovering from surgery), drive transports to a midpoint in Chiefland (van and gas provided), take a “Dog for a Day,” help at events, or drop off supplies.

If any of that fits, call (850) 670-8414 or start here:

Shelby is a one-year-old Lab mix with a whole lot of energy and heart. This sweet girl loves her walks and the people who take her on them. She’s happiest in an active home where she can run, play, and burn off some of that youthful spirit.

Because she’s a bit of a climber, a securely fenced yard is a must. Shelby already knows how to sit on command and would make a great candidate for fun activities like obedience or even dock diving.

Thank you for reading this week’s Apalach Current — it really means a lot to have you here with me, noticing the small things that make this coast feel like home.

We'll be back next Monday with whatever the tide brings in. Until then, take care and enjoy the longer days.

Kiki

I write Apalach Current because I love this coast. This next part is just me.

There have been seasons in my own life when everything felt like too much — work, family, the pace of it all. During the hardest parts of burnout, when I felt lost, uncertain, and ready to give up, I rediscovered something I’d been missing:

my faith.

What started as a search for a little more freedom turned into something deeper — a return to God, and a stronger relationship with Him.

If you’re walking through a hard season and something feels missing, I want you to know it is possible to find God in the middle of that and come out the other side. I did.

I’d like to share a link to a church that helped me when I was out of sorts.

If you need someone to talk to or would like more info:

👉 Flatirons Church

Whether you click or not, just know this:

You’re not alone.

Keyla
