A few local notes worth sharing this week:
🚒 Jason Timbert named Florida Volunteer Fire Chief of the Year
The Florida Fire Chiefs’ Association selected Chief Jason Timbert of the St. George Island Volunteer Fire Department as the 2026 Florida Volunteer Fire Chief of the Year. He received the award July 14. The Times reported the department has grown to more than 35 active volunteers, tripled its Firefighter I certified personnel, and increased water delivery capacity by nearly 180 percent with 5-inch supply hose. 👉 https://franklincounty.news/2026/10/06/timbert-named-states-volunteer-fire-chief-of-the-year/

⚖️ Eli Whaley sworn in as an attorney
On Sept. 18, Carrabelle’s Eli Whaley was sworn in at the courthouse in Apalachicola by County Judge Gordon Shuler. Whaley is a 2020 graduate of Franklin County High School, a 2023 graduate of Troy University, and a 2026 graduate of Thomas Goode Jones School of Law. He works for the public defender’s office in Franklin County. 👉 https://franklincounty.news/2026/10/06/whaley-sworn-in-as-attorney/

🌊 State agencies opposed dredging on the Apalachicola River
In comments on a Corps notice for a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement, the Florida State Clearinghouse — speaking for six agencies, including DEP and FWC — said the state has serious concerns about reinstating operations and maintenance dredging on the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint navigation channel and would not recommend the Corps reestablish it. Apalachicola Riverkeeper applauded the position. 👉 https://franklincounty.news/2026/10/06/riverkeeper-applauds-state-for-opposing-dredging/

Tip of The Day |
Ask Which Bay Before You Order In Apalachicola, a seafood menu doesn’t necessarily tell you where the oysters came from. Ask the server or fishmonger which bay supplied today’s oysters; harvest rules and availability can change. If they’re from elsewhere, ask what came in locally that day and let the answer guide your order. |

This Week Along the Forgotten Coast
Isaias has moved on. The coast took the edge of it. The water does not care what month it is. The towns do. We hope everyone came out all right.
Enjoy the beauty around us and have a blessed week...

Franklin County Humane Society Needs Volunteers
The Franklin County Humane Society is looking for people who can help the forgotten pets of the Forgotten Coast. On their volunteer page they list several ways to pitch in: walk and socialize dogs and cats, foster (including puppies, nursing mothers, or animals recovering from surgery), drive transports to a midpoint in Chiefland (van and gas provided), take a “Dog for a Day,” help at events, or drop off supplies.
If any of that fits, call (850) 670-8414 or start here:

Thank you for reading this week’s Apalach Current — it really means a lot to have you here with me, noticing the small things that make this coast feel like home.
We'll be back next Monday with whatever the tide brings in. Until then, take care.
|
I write Apalach Current because I love this coast. This next part is just me. There have been seasons in my own life when everything felt like too much — work, family, the pace of it all. During the hardest parts of burnout, when I felt lost, uncertain, and ready to give up, I rediscovered something I’d been missing: my faith. What started as a search for a little more freedom turned into something deeper — a return to God, and a stronger relationship with Him. If you’re walking through a hard season and something feels missing, I want you to know it is possible to find God in the middle of that and come out the other side. I did. I’d like to share a link to a church that helped me when I was out of sorts. If you need someone to talk to or would like more info: Whether you click or not, just know this: You’re not alone.
