Memorial Day at Veterans Memorial Plaza

Remembering the Past

Remembering and Honoring:

Memorial Day at Veterans Memorial Plaza

Every year on Memorial Day, a quiet but powerful gathering takes place right in the heart of Apalachicola at Veterans Memorial Plaza. On Monday, May 25, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the community will once again come together to remember and honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

The centerpiece of the plaza is the striking bronze “Three Soldiers” statue — the only detailed replica in existence made directly from the original molds of the famous Three Servicemen Statue that stands at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Dedicated in 2008, this statue has become a deeply meaningful landmark for local veterans and their families. It stands as a permanent reminder of service, sacrifice, and the cost of freedom.

For many local veterans, this annual ceremony is more than just an event — it’s a moment to stand shoulder to shoulder with neighbors, friends, and fellow service members. It’s a place where stories are quietly shared, names are spoken aloud, and gratitude is expressed in the simplest and most sincere way possible. In a small coastal town like ours, these gatherings carry extra weight. They remind us that the people who served aren’t distant figures in history books — they are our neighbors, our fathers, our uncles, our friends.

Whether you have a personal connection to someone who served or simply want to show respect for those who gave everything, this is a meaningful way to spend part of your Memorial Day morning. The ceremony is hosted by Three Servicemen Statue South, Inc., American Legion Post 106, and the Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum — organizations that have worked hard to keep the memory of our veterans alive here on the Forgotten Coast.

If you’re in town, please consider going to the Veterans Memorial Plaza (230 Market Street). It’s a small act that means a great deal.
