Florida

Fun Facts

1. Britton Hill, located in Walton County in the Florida Panhandle, is the highest natural point in the state at just 345 feet above sea level. This makes it the lowest “high point” of any state in the United States. 👉 More info: Visit Florida – Britton Hill

2. Florida has long been known as the Lightning Capital of the United States. While one recent year saw Oklahoma briefly take the top spot for lightning density, Florida consistently ranks at or near the top for the highest concentration of lightning strikes per square mile and leads the nation in lightning-related deaths.

3. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León named the land “La Florida” in 1513. He chose the name because he arrived during the Easter season (called Pascua Florida in Spanish, meaning “Feast of Flowers”) and because of the area’s lush, flowery landscape.
